The visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to Taiwan has not yet been confirmed, but it is already causing a stir at the highest levels of the American administration.

"

The army thinks it's not a good idea

," warned Joe Biden on Thursday.

After very strong warnings from China, Beijing is threatening to take strong measures to "

safeguard its national sovereignty

" if this visit takes place this summer.

The head of the House of Representatives, openly critical of Beijing, already spoke virtually with the vice-president of Taiwan in January.

Nancy Pelosi, the third most important figure in the protocol order, would be the highest US representative to visit Taiwan since 1997.

The controversy falls badly by Joe Biden who must meet with his Chinese counterpart in the next ten days.

Joe Biden had already angered Beijing at the end of May

by saying that the United States would intervene militarily in the event of an invasion of Taiwan by China

.

An invasion that would only be a matter of time according to the CIA.
