Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sacked Finance Minister Abderrahmane Raouya on Tuesday (June 14th) after consulting the Prime Minister.

The Head of State "signed a decree on Tuesday ending the functions of Finance Minister Abderrahmane Raouya", announced the presidency.

The secretary general of the ministry has been given the interim responsibility.

No known reason for his eviction

Abderrahmane Raouya, 61, was appointed Minister of Finance during a mini-ministerial reshuffle carried out by Abdelmadjid Tebboune on February 17.

Until then, the finance portfolio was held by Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane.

This was Abderrahmane Raouya's third stint as head of the Ministry of Finance, having held the position from May 2017 to March 2019, and from January to June 2020. No reason was given for his dismissal.

It came days after the Algerian Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF) announced, in a document published on Wednesday, restrictions on banking transactions with Spain amid a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

But after the European Union warned Algiers on Friday of the consequences of such trade restrictions, Algeria's mission to the EU lamented a "hasty" reaction from the bloc, saying that this "alleged measure (. .) actually exists only in the minds of those who claim it".

On Saturday, Abderrahmane Raouya spoke to Parliament about the lack of new cars on the Algerian market, saying according to statements reported by the press that the situation "will soon find new solutions".

His dismissal comes less than a month after that of Central Bank Governor Rostom Fadli, dismissed on May 23 by President Tebboune without any reason being given for this dismissal.
