Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune (Anatolia)

The Algerian presidency announced yesterday, Thursday, that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided to hold presidential elections on September 7th, which means moving them forward by 3 months from their scheduled date in December.

This announcement came in a statement by the Algerian presidency following a meeting chaired by Tebboune to study preparations for the presidential elections and attended by the Speaker of the National Assembly (the second chamber of Parliament) Saleh Gogel, the Speaker of the National People’s Assembly (the first chamber of Parliament) Ibrahim Boughali, the President of the Constitutional Court Omar Belhaj, and Prime Minister Nadhir Arbawi.

The meeting was also attended by the Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha, the Director of the Presidential Office, Boualem Boualem, the Minister of the Interior, Ibrahim Murad, and the head of the Independent National Election Authority, Miloud Charafi.

According to the statement, “it was decided to hold pre-presidential elections, the date of which was set on Saturday, September 7, 2024, and the Electoral College (updating voter lists in preparation for the vote) will be called on June 8, 2024.”

The Algerian presidency did not mention the reasons for bringing forward the date of the presidential elections.

Tebboune was elected President of Algeria on December 12, 2019, for a five-year presidential term, renewable once according to the text of the constitution, but he has not yet officially announced his candidacy.
