Russia's military build - up in and around Ukraine, as well as other European security issues, are on the agenda, according to a NATO press release.

Russia's mobilization at the Ukrainian border has led to great tension between Russia and the United States, as well as between Russia and the EU.

Both the EU and the US have threatened harsh sanctions if Moscow carries out a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Several international meetings will now be held in an attempt to alleviate the situation.

On Wednesday, NATO will meet with Russian representatives in Brussels.

In mid-January, Russia has scheduled separate meetings with the United States, NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

On Tuesday, EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell will begin a visit to the front line in eastern Ukraine.

Later this week, meetings will be held in the capital Kiev.

According to a statement from the European Commission, the trip should be seen as proof of the EU's continued strong support for Ukraine.
