July 01, 2021Curfew returns to Portugal from Friday. The decision was made by the government due to the resurgence of new Covid cases caused by the Delta variant, which has now become the prevalent one.



"We found that last week the situation deteriorated again", said Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva at a press conference, adding that "there are no conditions to say that the pandemic is under control".



The ban on driving between 11pm and 5am will also come into force in Porto. The limitation of the opening hours of bars and restaurants, which already affects Lisbon, will also be extended to 16 other municipalities, with an incidence of over 240 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The closing will be at 10.30pm during the week and at 3pm. 30 on the weekend.



In the last 24 hours, Portugal has recorded 2400 positives and 5 deaths out of a population of 10.2 million inhabitants: it is the highest number since mid-February, when the total lockdown was in effect. In the region of Lisbon and the Tagus valley, 1339 new cases have been recorded, while in the Porto area there are 566 and in the Algarve 217. The delta variant is now in the majority.
