Until a few weeks ago, Portugal was among the countries with the fewest cases in Europe, but the situation has deteriorated.

On Thursday, there were more than 2,000 new cases, a first since February.

Behind this resumption of the epidemic, there is the Delta variant, which has become predominant.

Young people are the most affected, as vaccination has not yet been opened to them.

The government calls for caution

The curfew applies to everyone, and there is no exception for the vaccinated.

Residents will also be prohibited from leaving Lisbon and its metropolis this weekend.

The announcement comes a few days after the early closure of schools in the Algarve, in the south of the country.

For its part, the government calls for the greatest caution, but it considers that the situation is far from being as serious as it was last winter.
