October 12, 2020 - The last decade has been the warmest the North Atlantic Ocean has experienced in the past 2,900 years.

This is indicated by the data of the fluctuations in sea surface temperatures, obtained from the analysis of the sediments of a Canadian lake, which have made it possible to reconstruct this part of the planet's climatic history with a depth never reached before.



To support it in the journal of the American Academy of Sciences (PNAS) are the researchers of the University of Massachusetts.



There is an index that climatologists use to study the variability of the surface temperatures of the North Atlantic: it is called Amv (Atlantic Multidecadal Variability) and "takes into account how sea surface temperatures vary as a whole, determining some climatic phenomena over several years", explains Massimiliano Pasqui, physicist of the National Research Council (Cnr).



The variability of the North Atlantic has repercussions on North America, Europe and all of Russia.

With this new analysis technique, which exploited the study of the sediments of the South Sawtooth Lake of Ellesmere Island, the researchers confirmed not only "that these swings in Atlantic temperatures have lasted for at least 3,000 years, and therefore are a fundamental feature of the planet. - concludes Pasqui -, but also that the last decade has been the hottest ever recorded in such a long period of time ".
