It is the state of New South Wales that has been hit most severely by the Australian fires, and 18 of the 24 deaths confirmed by the authorities must have occurred there.

In Lake Conjola, located in the state, large parts of the village have been destroyed by the fire that has passed. And in the ashes is the remainder of several houses.

"We have no home"

SVT's Asia correspondent Ulrika Bergsten accompanied Lake Conjola-bon Karen Brown as she returned to the remains of what was once her and her family's home.

"Nothing can be preserved, absolutely nothing," she says.

- We have no home. We live with friends and family, but we have no house left.

13 billion to those affected

In Lake Conjola, as in several other places, work is now underway to restore, among other things, electricity grids and roads. The Australian Government has allocated SEK 13 billion to rebuild the communities affected and to prepare for future fires.

Although Karen Brown has just lost her home, she chooses to focus on what she can do to quickly start on:

- Either you crawl into a corner and break up, or you like the situation and grab the thing. You have to move on, it doesn't serve to give up. I don't want to break down, because if I start crying now, I would never stop.
