Eleven days after the killing of Arbinda who had plunged him into mourning, Burkina Faso is again hit by a deadly attack. Fourteen civilians, mostly college students, were killed Saturday in the northwest of the country. According to security sources, the bus transporting them jumped on an explosive device on a road near the Malian border. The provisional report also reports four serious injuries.

"The incident took place around 9:00 am and the security and rescue missions were immediately deployed on the spot," said a source. "The victims are mainly students who returned to their place of study after spending the end of the year family holidays," said another security source. The attack was not immediately claimed.

"Ten terrorists" neutralized Friday according to authorities

This new killing of civilians comes after the massacre of Arbinda (north), committed on Christmas Eve. 35 civilians, including 31 women, had been killed, as well as seven soldiers, during the attack on the military base and then on the town. The Burkinabés had followed 48 hours of national mourning in tribute to the victims of this attack, the worst that the country has known since the start of the jihadist violence five years ago.

On Saturday, the General Staff of the Burkinabé armies also reported an attack on a gendarmerie unit in Inata (north) which occurred on Friday. “Showing exemplary composure and responsiveness, the elements succeeded in defeating the attackers. The balance sheet shows a dozen neutralized terrorists, "said a press release. Like its Sahelian neighbors Mali and Niger, Burkina Faso is facing jihadist attacks that have left around 750 dead and 560,000 displaced since 2015.
