29 December 2019 Still cold in the Central-South, where a flow of cold air from the Balkans is bringing snow even at low altitude on the central-southern Adriatic regions, from Molise to upper Puglia, up to Ionian Calabria and north-eastern Sicily. Stable weather, however, in the rest of Italy, according to the forecasts of 3B Meteo meteorologists.

In the central and southern regions, unstable conditions are causing snowfall even at hilly altitudes, on average starting from 500 meters, and 800 meters in Sicily. In some places, starting from Sila, gusts of wind from the north-eastern quadrants cause storms. Unstable conditions are expected to continue until Monday, with rain showers in the South, and from Tuesday the high pressure will favor stable and sunny weather throughout Italy, with temperatures gradually returning to rise.

The sun will also greet New Year 2020, thanks to the interruption of the flow of cold air from the Balkans and the presence of an anticyclone that will lead to a short retreat of winter; in the same period the temperatures will rise again to exceed the seasonal averages in the maximum values, especially in the North, thanks to the influx of a very mild mass of air coming from Africa.

"2020 will end with even rather anomalous heat conditions in the western Alpine arc, where temperatures above the inversion layers will reach temperatures much higher than the averages of the period," notes meteorologist Lorenzo Badellino of 3B Meteo. The cold, coming from Northern Europe, could reappear in the early days of 2020, around the Epiphany.
