WTO trade dispute resolution dysfunction Cannot be elected due to opposition from the US Dec. 11:26

WTO = The World Trade Organization's means for resolving trade disputes has become dysfunctional due to a lack of committee members. The top of the WTO has shown a policy of urgently discussing with member countries, but there is no clear path to break the situation.

The WTO, which includes 164 countries and territories, including Japan, is the best if the member countries can not resolve the trade disputes through discussions. The final decision will be made by the higher committee in the court.

The number of members who are judges of the senior committee is seven, but the vacancies are not filled after the term of office expires, and two of the three remaining members expire on the 10th to secure the necessary personnel for the hearing. I can't.

As a result, the WTO has been suspended for the first time since its establishment in 1995.

This was due to the opposition of the United States who was dissatisfied with the decision of the senior committee to resolve the dispute, and a new member could not be appointed. It was not resolved at the general board meeting held on the 10th.

At the press conference, the WTO Secretary-General Azebedo said, “It will not end the resolution of WTO trade disputes due to the malfunction of the senior committee, and we will have to find a solution in the member states.” I showed an idea.

However, because there is a big difference in the way of thinking between the United States and other countries, the path to break the situation is not visible, and the WTO, which is responsible for resolving trade disputes, is in a difficult situation.
