Egypt condemned Ankara's signing with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj two memorandums of understanding in the fields of security cooperation and maritime areas.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry considered that such memorandums have no legal effect. The "Skhirat" political agreement authorizes the Prime Minister's Council as a whole and not the Chairman of the Council alone to conclude international agreements.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that the agreement does not bind any party, and does not affect the system of demarcation of maritime borders in the Mediterranean because it is illegal, as she put it.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged the international community to confront what it called a negative approach, at a time when international efforts are continuing to sign a comprehensive agreement between the Libyans within the framework of the Berlin process.

The comments came after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced earlier on Thursday that his country had signed a memorandum of understanding on maritime borders with the internationally recognized Libyan National Accord government to protect Turkey's rights in the Mediterranean.

Ihsanoglu said this during a joint press conference held today with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq Masur Barzani after a meeting between them in the Turkish capital Ankara.
