The historic Alava prison of Nanclares de Oca has the days numbered. The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions has set next November 30 as the deadline for this veteran prison in the Basque Country to be completely unoccupied.

After several changes of date and once the works of the new prison of Alava have been completed and the new inmates are being accommodated, the Ministry of Interior signed on November 25 the decree for these facilities to be abandoned, both for the prisoners who serve their sentence there as for the officials who live in the authorized pavilions.

There are about 70 inmates who, in open regime, still come to this place to sleep. All belong to the open section, remains the only useful in said enclosure. The rest of the inmates that housed this prison were transferred in a staggered manner to the new prison of Alava. In the Open Section there are only prisoners in third grade.

Likewise, in this enclosure the dwellings destined for public prison employees are kept in operation, which, however, are already working in the new prison enclosure. These officials, union sources explained, amount to more than a hundred who will lose their homes. In the new enclosure they will only have the job.

For the unions, this situation is a loss of working conditions for these public employees, who for five years have been able to enjoy a home in jail and now will have to pay for one.

The Nanclares de Oca prison is one of the most emblematic centers of the penitentiary map. A high number of prisoners from the terrorist organization ETA have passed through their cells. In fact, it was the prison of choice for terrorists when they decided to break ties with their structures and condemn violence. That condemnation of the crimes of ETA opened the door to an approach of the ETA to prisons around the Basque Country and the autonomous community itself.

It was the so-called Nanclares route that gave the most publicity to the symbolic Alava prison. It was thus known to the route that the Government left open for ETA prisoners to break clearly with the terrorist organization.

The passage to this prison meant not only the approach to their family environment, but also the previous step to obtain the third penitentiary degree, which allows to leave the jail to enjoy permits.

Nandores passed through Idoia López Riaño La Tigresa , her partner Joseba Arizmendi and others known as Carmen Guisasola Solozabal , Kepa Pikabea Ugalde and Joseba Urrosolo Sistiaga .
