According to the newspaper Dagens Samhälle, 18 out of 21 regions failed to manage a healthy economy during the period 2006 to 2008. Region Östergötland was one of the few regions that succeeded. But now, bizarre times await. The region is subject to a deficit of SEK 726 million in healthcare.

- It is basically because we have a fantastic medical technology development. It is basically positive, but many more are getting older and sometimes you also need medical care. This places higher demands and we then need more resources for health care, says Kaisa Karro, chair of the regional board.

Earlier this year, it was also clear that Region Östergötland will raise the tax most of all regions throughout the country next year by a total of 85 öre.

- Tax increase is actually the consequence of having the costs run away throughout the mandate period, says Fredrik Sjöstrand (M), opposition council.
