The National Assembly backed down on Friday night voting the erasure of palm oil from the list of biofuels. The deputies voted on Thursday a parliamentary amendment providing for its postponement to 2026, causing an uproar.

After the outcry sparked by a first vote favoring palm oil, the National Assembly backed Friday night by maintaining its erasure of the list of biofuels, against the advice of the government.

Faced with the anger of environmentalists and the embarrassment of his majority, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had himself asked for a second vote on Friday. MPs voted on Thursday a parliamentary amendment providing for the postponement to 2026 of the exclusion of palm oil from the list of biofuels, which enjoy a tax advantage.
