A seven-storey building located on Alcalá street in Madrid has been evacuated on Wednesday night on a preventive basis as high levels of gas concentration have been detected in one of the homes of the building. Also, a section of the aforementioned road had to be closed to traffic for about two hours.

The events have taken place around 8:15 p.m. in a building located at number 139 of Alcalá street , with seven floors and eleven homes, as reported by Europa Press sources of Emergencies Madrid.

The neighbors warned of the presence of a strong smell of gas on a floor on the third floor that was empty. The place was attended by five staff members of the Firefighters of the City Hall of the capital, who accessed the property through a autoscale.

Once inside, firefighters checked with measurements that there was a high concentration of gas that could be dangerous. Preventively, all the residents of the building were evicted and ordered to remain outside their homes until further notice. Also, a wide safety cord has been established in the area.

At the same time, all the supplies of the building have been cut and firefighters have ventilated the houses one by one until guaranteeing that there was no danger. Natural Gas operators have also come to the place.

As a result of this incident, the traffic on Alcalá Street has been interrupted in the section between Goya and Jorge Juan , in both directions. At first, the circulation to Cibeles and a lane to Sales were enabled until finally around 23.15 hours the circulation has been completely restored.

Samur-Civil Protection health workers have also come to the place as a preventive, although their intervention has not finally been necessary. National Police personnel have taken charge of the investigation.
