A study conducted at the CHUs of France and published in the British medical journal The Lancet notes the sharp rise in the number of eye injuries suspected to have been caused by defense ball launchers (LBD) since the beginning of the crisis in the United States. Yellow vests.

The study published in the prestigious journal The Lancet is the result of a retrospective survey of all CHUs in France to identify suspected cases of eye injuries by LBD, between February 2016 and August 2019. French authors, doctors and researchers point out that the legislation does not provide for the systematic collection of data on injuries caused by these weapons, used in particular for the maintenance of order.

Result: Two cases were identified in 2016, one in 2017, but 25 in 2018 - the year of the beginning of the yellow vests crisis - and 15 over the studied period of 2019. Twenty-five patients had open wounds to the eyeball and 18 other trauma, including the retina (10 cases). The study also reported 25 cases of orbital fractures, 12 fractures of the face and two of brain damage. Thirty of the 43 patients had to be operated on one or more occasions, she says. Of these, nine had to be enucleated.

Since the beginning of the yellow vests movement, a controversy has arisen over the methods of intervention and the violence attributed to the police.
