“We regard this act as unacceptable and extremely blasphemous, since the memory of Soviet soldiers who gave their lives in the fight against the Nazis is sacred,” the message said on the diplomatic mission's Facebook page.

The embassy emphasized that “such vandalism is a direct consequence of attempts to rewrite the history of World War II and present the heroes who saved Latvia from the fascist yoke as“ occupiers ”.

The diplomatic mission called on Latvia "to find and punish those responsible as soon as possible, as well as to provide adequate protection for the memorial from vandals."

Earlier in Pardaugava in Riga, vandals desecrated a monument to soldiers - liberators of the city from Nazi invaders, and also left the inscription “occupiers” in Latvian on the monument.
