The German ambassador was summoned by the Foreign Ministry last Monday. Official reason for the summons: criticism against Eritrea by a journalist on German public radio Deutsche Welle.

Asmara's Information Minister and spokesman Yemane Ghebremeskel attacked Deutsche Welle, but without much precision. German public radio would be guilty of " persisting in its unbridled defamation campaigns against Eritrea ".

He went on to say that the German ambassador had been summoned to ask for a " clarification / correction on the incessant vitriol " broadcast by Deutsche Welle. Which has nothing to do, concludes the leader of this country without free media , with " journalistic objectivity ".

Deutsche Welle has not commented on this incident yet. But the Eritrean bad mood is probably rooted in a column published on Oct. 11 by the director of the Amharic radio service, criticizing the lack of change in Eritrea despite the peace deal with Ethiopia .

Eritrean journalist Habtom Yohannes recalls that it is the second time in a year that Eritrea has attacked Germany, an opposition stronghold where an important and influential diaspora resides.

In October 2018, a similar speech held in Berlin in front of the Parliament by the head of German diplomacy had already aroused a scathing statement from Asmara. Finally, it must be said that Germany is at the forefront of the rapprochement of Europe with the very likely Eritrean dictatorship.
