Teaching is no longer a dream. In France, but also elsewhere in Europe – in Sweden, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom – the profession is facing a real vocations crisis. The reasons are obvious: low pay and poor working conditions. But do all teachers in Europe face the same challenges?

The situation appears to be more worrying in Hungary. A standoff pits the ultraconservative government of Viktor Orban against teachers who have been demonstrating en masse since February 2022, alongside their students. They want to denounce salary conditions and staffing problems.

Interviewed by ENTR journalists, Hungarian professors described the deterioration of their status over the years: unfair dismissals, muzzled speech, etc. Since the education reform passed in 2023, nicknamed “revenge law”, they have lost their civil servant status, which protected them by the Labor Code.

However, in Europe, one country seems to stand out: Finland, where the education system is considered one of the most efficient in the world. Young professors tell ENTR how teaching is one of the most popular paths for students. “What makes me proud is that my job is very appreciated here,” summarizes one of them.
