JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Three rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel on Sunday, causing no casualties, the Israeli army said.

Al-Jazeera correspondent said that explosions occurred in the areas of Sderot and Ashkelon adjacent to the Gaza Strip, after the sound of sirens sounded.

The IDF confirmed that two out of three shells fired from Gaza had been intercepted by the Iron Dome towards a settlement area adjacent to the Strip.

The Israeli authorities were forced to evacuate thousands of people from an art festival in the city of Sderot after the shells fell.

In a statement, the municipal council in the Sha'ar Hanegev region in southern Israel announced a rocket landed in a field, causing a fire.

The Israeli security cabinet called an urgent meeting on Monday morning to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip.

Observers say that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to avoid escalation with Gaza, in order to ensure relative stability during the election, noting that a number of his political opponents are demanding a firmer response to Hamas.
