Although US sanctions against Iran are hurting Iran's economy, Washington and Tehran have escalated into an escalation of war between the two countries. Some Iranians have taken the matter as a joke.

In a video released by the White House, Trump announced that "the assets of Ayatollah Khomeini and his office will not survive the sanctions," while Khomeini died in 1989, thirty years ago.

Although it is a mistake to pronounce the name of the current Iranian guide Ali Khamenei, some Iranians have attributed it to what they consider the lack of knowledge that forms the foreign policy of the current US administration towards the region.

Others said Khomeini's annexation of sanctions was neither wrong nor a lie, but Trump's economic sanctions expanded to include the dead.

"Trump punished Imam Khomeini, and most likely in his next move, the Prophet Suleiman will be punished instead of General Qassem Soleimani," a Twitter user wrote.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday imposing tough new sanctions on Iran, targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Revolutionary Guards commanders.

Trump told reporters at the White House that the sanctions would block billions of dollars of Iranian funds and prevent Khamenei from accessing financial resources, adding that the supreme leader was responsible for what he called "Iran's hostile behavior."
