Two men were killed on Sunday in a fight in front of a polling station in the eastern province of Maltiyeh during the municipal elections. Seven people were arrested after a row between candidates in Istanbul's Asen Yurt district. East of the city, police said.

Maltiya province said an early morning clash between two groups in front of a polling station in the city of Putorghi, after being shot by a man who was later arrested.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after casting his vote in Istanbul, expressed regret for the incident, and confirmed that an investigation opened to reveal its circumstances.

The leader of the party happiness Tammel Karamullahoglu via Twitter, the two men are members of his party, and attributed the attack to the nephew of a candidate for the ruling Justice and Development Party.

The election looks difficult for Erdogan's AK Party, which has thrown all its weight into the race to avoid an earthquake that could be caused by a defeat in Ankara or Istanbul, where the country faces its first decade of economic contraction, record inflation and rising unemployment.
