Syria has a good chance of reaching a political solution to the devastating war that has been going on for eight years, after a ceasefire led to calm in most parts of the country, the head of the Syrian opposition negotiating body said.

"I think we have an opportunity now, because in almost all of Syria there is a cease-fire in the north-east and north of Syria, and counterterrorism efforts have achieved good results," Hariri said in an interview with Reuters.

"Now is the time to invest all these developments, namely the ceasefire, the fight against terrorism and the belief of the majority of the Syrian people that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is the political solution."

Hariri heads the opposition delegation in the UN-sponsored peace talks, and his latest comments came after he met with the new UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen.

The meeting in Riyadh, between Pedersen and Nasr Hariri, focused on all points to find a political solution to end the Syrian crisis, and the negotiating body confirmed that it will continue to coordinate positively with the new envoy.
