Beware of the light while sleeping.. it leads to serious health problems

A recent study revealed that sleeping in the presence of light increases the risk of two serious health problems, even if it is a little light.

And the British newspaper "Express" quoted a study published in the scientific journal PNAS that exposure to even a small amount of light during the night can damage the functions of the heart and blood vessels during sleep and increase insulin resistance the next morning.

Researchers from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine found that insulin resistance is a complication that can lead to diabetes.

The study authors acknowledge current and emerging scientific evidence that excessive exposure to light in the evening may negatively affect metabolic functions, namely decreased glucose tolerance (blood sugar) and decreased insulin resistance.

The study indicates that exposure to light before bed may be harmful to sleep and some physiological functions, as your brain uses the presence of light as a signal that it is time to wake up and wake up, and darkness as a signal that it is time to stop and sleep.

In addition, exposure to light activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and increases heart rate, while the darkness of the night in which the peripheral nervous system (PNS) handles rest and digestion, promotes relaxation, reduces heart rate, and maintains a healthy metabolism.

And when the sun goes down and it gets dark, the brain produces the sleep hormone melatonin, which is responsible for telling your system that it's time to relax and sleep, so exposure to light at night (from bedside lamps to TV screens) is thought to suppress melatonin production and disrupt a healthy, natural sleep pattern.

There are a number of simple ways to get a healthy sleep environment, including:

  • Darken your bedroom to ensure a peaceful and healthy night's sleep, using blackout curtains.

  • Wear an eye mask.

  • Keep electronics such as your phone and tablets away from you.
