She has had the "worst years of her life": Avril Lavigne had a musical break for five years because she was suffering from a severe Lyme disease. In early 2019, the 34-year-old will now release a new album - and has said it leaves more time than usual.

"In the past it was often the case that everything had to happen very fast, it was a big rush in the studio," said Lavigne of the German Press Agency. This time she would have had a lot of time to let the songs develop in peace. "That's definitely good for the music."

And the support of her ex-husband, the singer apparently helped a lot: In the recordings of the first two songs ("Head Above Water" and "Warrior") was Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger as a producer in the studio. "I was not really ready to work and sing at the time, and he supported me," Lavigne said. "Without him I would not have done that."

Avril Lavigne on Chad Kroeger: "He supported me"

The 34-year-old became known in the 2000s with songs like "Complicated" and "Girlfriend". In 2015, she reported in the US media about her serious illness, which was probably caused by a tick bite and she was tied to the bed for months. Previously, she had been reluctant to deal with her illness for a long time. She later commented on her tearful TV appearance in 2015: "I cried on TV, so embarrassing, Lol."

A short time later, Lavigne announced that she had separated from Kroeger. The two had married in 2013.
