[Live] Gaza Strip: civilians still bombed despite ICJ decision

The fate of civilians in Gaza remains at the heart of serious concerns this Saturday, January 27, the day after a decision by the highest UN court calling on Israel to prevent any possible act of “genocide” in the Palestinian territory. These concerns are focused on Khan Younes, the main city in the south of the besieged territory which has been the scene of fierce fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas in recent days.

What you must remember :

■ The town of

Khan Younes,

in the south of the Gaza Strip, is still

bombarded relentlessly

. The Israeli army considers that this is where the local leadership of Hamas is hiding.

■ The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has declared that

Israel must prevent any possible act of "genocide"

in Gaza. South Africa made an urgent appeal to the UN's highest court last month, arguing that

Israel

was violating the UN Genocide Convention. But if its orders are legally binding, the Court has no way of enforcing them.

■

UNRWA

announced on Friday that it was separating from “several” employees accused by Israel of being linked to the October 7 attack. In response, the United States will “temporarily suspend” all future funding to the UN agency.

■ The international community expressed its concerns after

tank fire against a shelter of the UN agency

for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) left thirteen people dead on Wednesday.

■ According to the Hamas Ministry of Health,

26,083 people have been killed in Gaza

since the war began on October 7. The majority of the dead are women, adolescents and children. There are more than 64,000 injured.

5:00 a.m.: Khan Younes bombed

The clashes, coupled with Israeli air raids, are forcing thousands of people to leave the city and have reduced the capacity of the two main local hospitals, Nasser and al-Amal, to a minimum. During the night, witnesses reported violent strikes on the spot and the Palestinian Red Crescent said it had received the dead and treated the wounded at al-Amal hospital.
