A limited drop... on certain products only

Supermarket chains have reached an agreement with nearly two-thirds of industrial SMEs in the agri-food sector, particularly on products such as fish, vegetables and fruit, ready meals, frozen foods and certain brands of pasta and rice.

But in detail, it shows a limited decrease, on average of only 1%. Certainly, the price of poultry will fall, as will that of cereals and derivatives, such as biscuits, pasta too, as their global food prices have fallen in 2023.

Natural disasters affect prices

But at the same time, other products will see their prices rise, including orange juice, olive oil, chocolate, sugar, rice. In many cases, it was climatic events that affected the level of harvests. This is what experts call green inflation.

As a result, Bruno Le Maire's promise of a price cut from February will probably not be kept on national brand products.
