06:00: Southern Gaza Strip under intense fighting

Early Sunday, the Israeli Air Force carried out "very violent air raids" near Khan Younis, and on the road between that city and Rafah, near the border with Egypt, the Hamas administration said. An AFP journalist witnessed the strikes in southern Gaza.

Hours later, a source close to the military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad told AFP that the two movements were involved in "violent clashes" around Khan Younis.

The Israeli military said it had "intensified" its operations in these areas of the southern Gaza Strip. "We need to increase the pressure," IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said, adding that an increasing number of Hamas fighters had been killed.

At the very beginning of its ground offensive, the Israeli army asked the population of the northern Gaza Strip to move south.
