The Berlin-based e-scooter manufacturer Unu has filed for insolvency. The application was filed on Thursday at the district court in Berlin-Charlottenburg, the company announced on Friday. "The reasons for the insolvency are increased material and transport costs, higher operating costs and the sharp slump in demand in the wake of inflation," it said. Business operations are to be continued as part of the insolvency proceedings. The company is striving for restructuring.

Unu was founded in Berlin about ten years ago and most recently employed around 50 people. According to the company, the battery-electric scooters are sold in Germany, France, Austria and the Netherlands. The company has been struggling with problems for years. According to Unu, production had to be stopped for several months during the pandemic. Then came the supply problems for chips and most recently the start-up is struggling with poor consumer sentiment.

"In 2023, the company fundamentally renewed its scooter subscription and also expanded its offline presence with retail partners," Unu said. "For this reason, we see good chances of reaching a restructuring solution and continuing the sale and service of the scooters," said insolvency administrator Gordon Geiser, according to the statement.
