Pedro Sánchez's new government has already initiated, in its first Council of Ministers, the order with which it begins the process of approving the 2024 General State Budget. The new spokesperson for the Executive, Pilar Alegría, has emphasised that this has been the first action of the Government, and has pointed out that the objective is to have the new accounts "as soon as possible".

"The determination is clear, and the determination is shown by the work. It is the first meeting of the Council, and the first is the approval of the ministerial order to move forward with the 2024 PGE," said Alegría, who also made direct reference to the European Commission's assessment of the Spanish Budget Plan yesterday.

The Minister of Education also stressed that Brussels "has approved the Government's budget accounts, the draft Budget of the Government of Spain", something that is indeed true. However, Alegría added that the Executive has received the "approval from the EU that gives a positive feeling in the reduction of the debt and deficit". And this point is not correct, because Brussels made it very clear that Spain's fiscal situation is "very bad" and demanded a "credible" medium-term debt reduction plan.
