Iraq: Five individuals convicted of murdering US citizen

The Iraqi judiciary announced that it had sentenced four Iraqis and an Iranian to life imprisonment for the murder of an American citizen shot dead in the heart of Baghdad last November.

Stephen Troell was shot dead on November 22 in the middle of the street in the lively Karrada district of the Iraqi capital. American citizen, English teacher, Christian displaying his faith on social networks, he had been living in the country for two years.

The questions surrounding the reasons for the murder of this foreign national remained unanswered at the time. On Thursday, the Iraqi judiciary sentenced five men to life imprisonment. A judicial source told France Press Agency that the defendants allegedly confessed to trying to kidnap him for ransom, without intent to kill him.

The case caused a stir at the end of 2022, while the security situation has improved since 2017 and the end of the war against Daesh. The violence continues. Settling scores, assassinations and kidnappings of prominent civil society figures or activists remain a reality in Iraq.
