Eight major Japanese companies have invested in "Rapidus," which aims to domestically produce cutting-edge semiconductors.

Rapidus President Atsuyoshi Koike and IBM executives held a joint press conference in Tokyo on the 13th.

According to this, the two companies will conclude a partnership for mass production of advanced semiconductors, and will proceed with research and development at a base in New York State in the United States.

Rapidus, in which Toyota Motor Corporation and NTT have invested, aims to mass-produce advanced semiconductors by 2027, but Japan currently does not have the technology to do so.

Since IBM leads the world in technology for making the width of circuits, which is indispensable for advanced semiconductors, the Japanese side aims to strengthen its technological capabilities by promoting joint development.

The new company signed a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation with a Belgian research institute on the 6th of this month, and is actively promoting collaboration with overseas companies that have excellent technology.

At a press conference, President Koike of "Rapidus" said, "Our role is to make IBM's basic technology a Japanese one as soon as possible and make it a true mass production technology. We will research together with IBM and advance the challenge." said.
