The Chinese group Quechen has suspended its silica plant project in Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône), on the land of the port of Marseille, which was to create 130 direct jobs, the port said on Tuesday. AFP, confirming information from the media Gomet '.

Quechen Silicon Chemical International Development Company Limited had signed in January 2018, during a visit by President Emmanuel Macron, an agreement with the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille for the installation of a silica production plant and a research and development center in Fos-sur-Mer.

The war in Ukraine in the line of sight

He thus promised an investment of 100 million euros and the creation of 130 direct jobs.

“Last November, Quechen informed us of its desire to suspend its establishment in the port of Marseille-Fos due to European geopolitical events,” the port told AFP.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, energy prices have soared in Europe, which has increased the cost of industrial production.

Quechen, based in Wuxi (eastern China), produces in particular high dispersion silica (HDS) used in the manufacture of "green tires", less polluting.

It reduces tire rolling resistance and therefore fuel consumption.

The port of Marseille-Fos, which is one of the largest in France, stresses that it has "rare available and suitable land" for investors, in particular "in the production of green energies".
