According to a newspaper report, the world's largest online mail order company Amazon is planning its biggest job cuts to date.

The group wants to start cutting around 10,000 jobs this week, the New York Times wrote on Monday, citing insiders.

Amazon itself initially did not comment.

The group recently had around 1.5 million employees, so the cuts would affect less than one percent.

Before the Christmas business, for which Amazon often hires reinforcements, it would be another signal for the abrupt end of the tech boom.

A number of companies in the industry recently announced layoffs.

Amazon already warned investors of a weak final quarter and decided at the beginning of November to stop hiring in view of the increased risks of inflation and recession.

The group is under pressure to cut costs after a spending offensive in the pandemic.

The stock is down over 40 percent this year.
