Mohammed Al Hammadi is the first Emirati and first Arab to head the International Organization of Nuclear Operators

The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program recorded a new achievement at the global level, represented by the selection of the Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Mohammed Al Hammadi, as the new president of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators, after a vote that took place during the general meeting of the international organization in the Czech capital, Prague.

With many countries seeking to join the International Organization of Nuclear Operators to support their plans to develop new nuclear energy facilities, the international community looks to the UAE as a role model in developing a peaceful nuclear energy program that adheres to the highest standards of safety, quality and transparency. Countries as well as the Organization's member states to enhance the safety and reliability of all nuclear power plants around the world.

The selection of Al Hammadi, as the first Emirati and first Arab to chair the International Organization of Nuclear Operators, highlights the close and continuous cooperation between the UAE and the global nuclear energy sector, and highlights the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation’s commitment to the highest standards of safety and security, and the application of best performance practices in various aspects of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program .

In his new position, Al Hammadi will lead the Board of Directors of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators, which includes three members from regional centers in several countries, and will promote direct participation of members to ensure the successful implementation of the organization's missions.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation joined the International Organization of Nuclear Operators in October 2010, and Al Hammadi was elected to the board of directors of the organization's Atlanta Center in the United States of America in August 2015.

On this occasion, Al Hammadi said: “The United Arab Emirates has a leading position in the field of nuclear energy development, as the Barakah plants apply best practices and invest the best applicable expertise in the global nuclear energy sector, through close cooperation with the International Organization of Nuclear Operators and the member states of the organization. Which owns nuclear power plants that produce electricity commercially. The presidency of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators is a new achievement for the UAE, and it is another example of the international community's confidence in the UAE's peaceful nuclear program."

Al Hammadi added: "Since its launch, the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program has relied on cooperation with a wide network of international organizations, in addition to cooperation with the most qualified experts in the world in this sector. I look forward to enhancing the performance of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators at the global level, and exploring new opportunities for cooperation with organizations The other key competence to support the development of advanced nuclear energy technologies such as Modular Mini Reactors, as part of proactive plans to support the organization.”

The International Organization of Nuclear Operators was established in 1989, in order to encourage cooperation and exchange of lessons learned and best performance practices among nuclear power plants around the world. Operating 430 nuclear power plants located in various regions of the world, including the United States of America and the European and Asian continents.

The organization is also committed to achieving the ambitious goals of the nuclear energy sector set for the year 2030, and helping every country and company operating in the commercial operation of nuclear power plants achieve the highest standards of nuclear safety through the exchange of information and best practices.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has been an active member of this international organization since 2010, and regularly participates in workshops, events, training programs and reviews of the organization.

In the UAE, with the commercial operation of the first and second stations in Barakah and the production of abundant and environmentally friendly electricity around the clock, and the connection of the third station to the electricity network, the Barakah stations are leading the process of accelerating the reduction of the carbon footprint of the energy sector in the country, and constitute a fundamental pillar in the state’s strategic initiative to reach Climate neutrality by 2050. Nuclear energy is also a major component of the UAE's low-carbon energy portfolio, ensuring the reliability, efficiency and resilience of the country's electricity grid for at least the next 60 years.

It is noteworthy that the Barakah plant is only the beginning, as it represents 20% of the UAE's peaceful nuclear program.

With abundant and environmentally friendly electricity being produced around the clock, ENEC is now focusing on exploring and attracting strategic investments in nuclear energy locally and internationally, in order to support growth and achieve development goals in the UAE.
