The investment should amount to “more than one billion euros” over five years.

The American giant Amazon intends to "more than double" its fleet of electric vehicles making deliveries in Europe in order to work towards "the decarbonization of its transport network in Europe", he announced on Monday.

Amazon says it already has "several thousand zero-emission vehicles in its European operations", including five electric trucks in the UK and 20 in Germany by the end of the year.

"As part of the investment announced today, Amazon plans to purchase and deploy more than 1,500 electric heavy goods vehicles within its European fleet, including more than 300 in France in the years to come," said the company. company in a press release.

Developing “micromobility hubs”

On a smaller scale, the company intends to increase its fleet of electric utilities from "more than 3,000" today to "more than 10,000 by 2025".

In addition, the group plans to develop "micromobility hubs", i.e. smaller depots that outlying warehouses can deliver to the heart of cities on foot or by cargo bike.

This type of center already exists in more than “20 European cities” including Paris, Lyon and Nice in France.

They will be present in “twice as many municipalities by the end of 2025”.

Objective “net zero CO2 emissions by 2040”

This deployment of electric vehicles should help Amazon to “depend less on traditional fossil fuels”.

But also to "further encourage the transport and car manufacturing sectors in Europe and around the world to redouble their efforts and continue to innovate" to fight against global warming.

The group has set itself the goal of being “net zero CO2 emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of the target set by the Paris Agreement”.

A goal, however, seen with skepticism by some organizations fighting against climate change because of the company's very high carbon footprint.
