The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to commercialize artificial crude oil made from hydrogen called "synthetic fuel" toward the realization of a decarbonized society, and has decided to formulate a roadmap until the 2040s.

On the 16th, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry established a new council for the commercialization of "synthetic fuels" in which oil and automobile industry groups participate.

Synthetic fuel is an artificial crude oil produced by synthesizing carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and it can be used at existing gas stations and gasoline vehicles. .

For this reason, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry decided at a council on the 16th to formulate a roadmap aiming for commercialization in the 2040s as fuel for automobiles, aircraft, and ships.

Currently, we are aiming to formulate a plan by the summer of next year after sorting out issues such as how to reduce the manufacturing cost, which is said to be about seven times that of gasoline, and the establishment of a mass production system.

At the conference, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Shinichi Nakatani said, "Expectations for synthetic fuels are increasing toward carbon neutrality in 2050. In order to promote their introduction, the supply side and the demand side should share the current situation and issues. It is important that we work together as one,” he said.
