• The Bank of Spain warns of the coming economic slowdown and high inflation for longer

The

Spanish economy

grew

by 5.5% in 2021

, four tenths more than what the National Institute of Statistics (

INE

) had advanced in March, due to the pull that

private household consumption

had , as this body has updated this Thursday .

However, this good news is accompanied by less positive news:

the drop in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

that the country experienced in

2020

, the year of the pandemic,

was 11.3%

and not 10.8%, as initially he had signed up, five tenths more accused;

while

in 2019 the growth was 2%

and not 2.1%.

The INE has published this Thursday a

review of the national accounts

for the last three years in which it updates the magnitudes of growth and decrease that the economy has experienced.

"There are some

variations

in the estimates for 2021 with a

greater contribution from domestic demand

(5.2%, compared to 4.7%) and a lower contribution from external demand (0.3%, compared to 0.5 With regard to national demand, the year-on-year variation in the volume of

final consumption expenditure

is 5.1% compared to the 4.2% previously estimated.For its part, gross capital formation grew by 5 .9%, compared to 6.8% of the previous estimate," explained the Institute.

This means that it was the

country's domestic demand

that sustained growth with a minimal contribution -three tenths- from the foreign sector and, within the national

demand, household consumption

contributed more than expected to growth, while

investment business

grew almost one point less than what had been calculated.

After this review, the

value of GDP at current prices

-that is, without eliminating the effect of inflation- for 2021 stood at

1,206,842 million euros.

The INE confirmed a

6.6% increase in employment

measured in full-time jobs, which means that if all employment in the country were full-time there would be

18 million jobs

at the end of 2021, compared to a much higher number of Social Security affiliates.

Hours worked increased by 7.2%

, compared to 7.0% in the previous estimate.

Biggest crash in the pandemic

The INE has detailed that the update of the drop in GDP that the country suffered during the pandemic occurs after incorporating the results of

structural economic surveys

referring to that year, such as the Structural Survey of Companies, Survey of Construction Structure and Statistics on R&D activities), which have been published throughout the second half of 2021 and the first half of 2022.

At the end of 2021, Spain's GDP was equivalent to

1,245,513 million euros

, but the impact of covid-19 on the economic fabric caused a collapse to

1,117,989 million.

In

2021

, it recovered and surpassed the 1.2 billion barrier again, but it was still

below the pre-pandemic level

.

At the end of the second quarter of 2022, that level has not yet been recovered and experts point out that it will have to wait until

the end of 2023

to reach it, which places

Spain at the bottom of the European Union

in returning to the 2019 standards .

According to the series updated this Thursday, GDP grew

by 2.3% in 2018

;

in 2017, 3.0%;

in 2016, 3.0%;

in 2015, 3.8%;

in 2014, 1.4%;

in 2013, it fell -1.4%

;

in 2012, -3.0%

;

in 2011, -0.8%;

in 2010 it rose 0.2%;

in 2009, -3.8%

;

in 2008 it grew by 0.9%, and in 2007, +3.6%.
