• Inflation stands at 10.4% in August and tenses the conflict over the increase in wages in Spain

The

increase in the CPI of 10.4%

year-on-year in the month of August, anticipated this Tuesday by the INE, has intensified the demands of the unions to

raise salaries in Spain -

both those that are agreed by agreement with the companies, as well as the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI)-, a claim supported by the Minister of Labor,

Yolanda Díaz,

but from which the first vice president,

Nadia Calviño

, and the

businessmen themselves

, who warn that measures that increase the costs of companies will end up affecting employment.

"

If we continue to burden companies more, in the

end what is going to occur, as the Minister of Labor or the Minister of Social Security rightly says, is a

slowdown in employment and economic growth

and it is not that we are going to recover the levels of income 2024, but already in 2025", warned this morning the vice president of the CEOE,

Iñigo Fernández de Mesa

, in an interview on Onda Cero.

He explained that inflation not only affects workers but also companies, whose business margins (profits) are shrinking because many cannot raise their final prices.

Therefore, he believes that it should be

the public sector,

whose tax collection has reached a record figure,

which has to compensate for the decline in purchasing power

that wage earners are suffering.

"

The only one that has benefited from inflation is the State

, which has triggered its tax revenues to the highest levels in history. The public sector is the one that has to help and contribute its grain of sand to compensate people with more difficulties,

what cannot be done is to load more on the companies

because they have been suffering a lot, they have been the great sufferers from the covid (...) they are currently the ones that are suffering the most because corporate profits have fallen more than in all of Europe, in a very significant way. If we want to try to help the income of the workers who are suffering the most from inflation,

it is public revenue that has to compensate them

," he claimed.

Vice President

Yolanda Díaz

has publicly supported in recent days

the mobilizations that the unions are going to undertake against the bosses

on account of the rise in wages, the main stumbling block in the dialogue on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement - which aims to set the guidelines for increases of salaries in Spain in the coming years and on which there is a difference of opinion.

Faced with the requests of

UGT and CCOO

, supported by

Díaz

, that there be an increase in them, the first vice president,

Nadia Calviño,

has asked this Tuesday for "

moderation"

in an interview on La 1 de TVE.

In his opinion, what the country needs is an

income pact

that serves so that, on the one hand, the unions commit to asking for moderate wage increases -not in line with inflation- that would fuel the inflationary spiral and, on the other, that companies accept not to raise final prices and assume part of the loss of profits that they will suffer due to the increase in costs.

Both legs would serve to

avoid the dreaded second round effects,

that is to say, that even more inflation is generated, but it is a very difficult agreement to reach.

Regarding the

Minimum Interprofessional Salary,

which the Minister of Labor seems willing to raise above 60% of the average salary -the legislature's commitment- and which should reach 1,100 euros according to the unions,

Calviño has also distanced himself from Díaz

by saying that the commitment is to

raise it to 60% of the average salary,

that is, to a range to be confirmed

between 1,011 and 1,049 euros.

The group of experts from the Ministry will meet this Friday to update these figures.

The

CEOE

has recalled that raising the SMI is a decision of the Government, but has described as "

surprising

" that the debate is opening now when the rise would have to take place from January 2023. It has asked the Government that, as the Statute of the Workers, take into account "the situation of the economy, inflation, productivity - which has fallen substantially or the proportion of work in GDP.

These are variables that the Government should analyze and be prudent because we are risking the economic recovery of Spain ".

SMEs ask that their "delicate situation" be valued

The employers' association of small businesses,

Cepyme

, has also requested in this sense that the Government be

responsible

when taking measures.

"

The Confederation claims responsibility from the Government

in the face of a particularly complicated autumn and winter and asks

not to use the labor market

as a

scenario for political disputes,

since

the main victims will be the most vulnerable companies and workers

. The answer cannot be unique for all companies and it should be taken into account that in Spain the percentage of vulnerable companies has increased and it presents the worst situation among the large economies of the euro, according to the latest ECB surveys.Wages should not be totally decoupled from productivity if they are to be avoid even more worrying consequences in the long term," he said in a statement.

He asks him to take into account "

the delicate situation that many companies face

before taking

measures that directly or indirectly aggravate their situation

" and reminds him that "many companies are setting up contingency plans to deal with the current situation and they do in a context of great uncertainty that further complicates decision-making".

"This causes caution to prevail and some spending and investment decisions are beginning to be quarantined, not only among companies, but also among families. Companies are having to adjust their schedules in the face of rising energy prices, which restructuring their production plans, adjusting stocks or even considering partial or total temporary closures of part of their chains, while renegotiating payment terms to their suppliers and financial creditors", laments the organization led by

Gerardo Cuerva.
