As in the past, if a lot of rain falls at once, the river embankment collapses and causes great damage.

It is also characterized by being made of eco-friendly materials.

The rice fields and villages have turned into a sea of water.

The torrential rain caused the embankment to collapse and the river rushed in.

The soil and sand that came through the collapsed embankment hit the greenhouse.

40% of river flooding is caused by dike collapse.

Summer precipitation and torrential rains are increasing every year, so strong dykes can prevent flooding.

A domestic research team has developed a technology for reinforcing embankments using eco-friendly raw materials.

It is a method of mixing biopolymer, a material extracted from plants, and aggregate, and covering it on the surface of the embankment.

Biopolymer has good adhesion and water resistance, so it prevents soil from leaking out of the embankment and allows rainwater to flow.

As a result of testing on the same scale as a real river, the newly reinforced embankment lasted more than 6 hours when the soil embankment collapsed in 15 minutes and the trees and grass planted in 30 minutes.

The strength is 80% of that of a concrete embankment, and as it is an eco-friendly material, it also has the advantage that plants can grow on the embankment.

[Jun-Goo Kang / Dr. Korea Institute of Construction Technology: There are parts that are 20-30% more expensive in materials, but there are parts that reduce construction and maintenance are a little easier.]

However, if the existing embankment itself is weak, this construction method The embankment may collapse even if the surface is strengthened with the

Currently, embankment reinforcement works using the new construction method have been carried out in Sincheon, Daegu and Daecheongcheon, Gimhae.

If the pilot project proves its effectiveness, we plan to expand it nationwide from next year.
