China News Agency, Kunming, March 5th: Is the "spring" of Yunnan coffee coming?

  Author Liu Lihui

Recently, as the price of international coffee futures rose to a ten-year high, many domestic brands of coffee drinks announced price increases.

Yunnan's coffee bean planting area and output account for more than 98% of the country. Whether it can take advantage of this wave of continuous price hikes to bring its coffee industry to "spring" has attracted much attention.

The purchase price of Yunnan coffee beans has risen significantly

In March, in Baoshan, Yunnan, the picking of specialty coffee beans entered the peak period.

In a 500-acre coffee farm on the slope of 1,300 meters above sea level in the northeast of Gaoligong Mountain, more than 30 workers are busy picking and processing every day.

According to Xin Xue, the manager of the manor, the picking period lasts from January to the end of April.

"Recently, the purchase price of commercial beans in Yunnan is between 30 yuan and 37 yuan (RMB) per kilogram, an increase of more than 30% compared with the same period last year." Xin Xue said that the high-quality beans widely grown in Baoshan City are not subject to international futures Price influence, "From the perspective of the lowest purchase price, the fine beans that cost 50 yuan/kg in late February this year have recently risen to 68 yuan/kg. Beans with high cupping scores can be sold for 1,000 yuan/kg."

Xin Xue said that in 2006, he took Yunnan coffee beans to Xiamen to participate in the expo. At that time, many Chinese consumers did not know that the imported coffee raw materials they drink came from Yunnan.

In order to break the situation, over the past 20 years, Yunnan Province has successively issued a number of guiding documents to support the development of the coffee industry.

In 2018, the province began to build a world-class "green food brand", and later listed coffee as one of the eight key industries of this "brand", promoting it on the road of industrial remodeling.

Yunnan specialty coffee becomes a manifestation of competitiveness

From “raised in a boudoir” to breaking the barriers of circles, Yunnan coffee has gradually been “seen”.

In the industry "track", in recent years, Nestlé, Starbucks, Luckin and many other brands have made key layouts and launched a variety of Yunnan coffee products; Shanxundou takes Yunnan specialty coffee as a manifestation of competitiveness.

On February 14 this year, China Post launched its first coffee shop in Xiamen. The product introduction clearly stated that Yunnan coffee beans were used.

Subsequently, on February 21, KFC, a western-style fast food brand, launched its first boutique flash-brewed freeze-dried coffee "Yunnan Xiaohong Can" in Kunming, showing a clear geographical indication, which once again aroused the industry's attention to the raw materials of Yunnan boutique coffee.

Is the "spring" of Yunnan coffee coming?

"In the past two years, Yunnan coffee has become really popular." As the first barista to use Yunnan coffee beans in the World Barista Competition and won the championship in China, Pan Wei has publicly expressed his love for Yunnan coffee many times, "In recent years In the coming years, more and more brands and baristas have brought Yunnan coffee into the public eye, which will greatly promote its industrial development.”

"High-quality Yunnan coffee beans are becoming the focus of competition among brands." Mr. Cao Cunli, who was born in a Taiwanese coffee family, has been rooted in Baoshan, Yunnan since 2003 to cultivate coffee business.

He believes that "the chain brands such as Starbucks and KFC are focusing on Yunnan specialty coffee beans, which will guide and deepen the awareness of high-quality products in the entire industry."

The newly released "Yunnan Province's "14th Five-Year Plan" to Build a World-Class "Green Food Brand" Development Plan" proposes to build Yunnan into an important global specialty coffee production base; by 2025, Yunnan's specialty coffee ratio will reach more than 20%. .

Taking the road of high-quality products is becoming the development direction chosen by the industry and the local government.

"At present, the Yunnan coffee industry is preparing to take off on the runway, and the future is very bright." Cao Cunli said that the next 30 years will be the golden age of coffee in Yunnan and even China.
