While working on the Mazda 929 project, designer Shunji Tanaka was entrusted in 1986 with the project for what would become the MX-5.

Designed by a team divided between 3 different entities in Los Angeles, Tokyo and Hiroshima, the small convertible was polished by Tanaka, who wanted to give it a Japanese touch.

Passionate about making traditional Noh masks, he was inspired by this craft in his work.

A few years later, Tanaka left Mazda for Kawasaki, where he designed several generations of motorcycles including the ER-6.

Until the end of his life, he participated in numerous gatherings of the Mazda MX-5, a vehicle that many enthusiasts around the world worship.

Well Named.
