(Economic Observation) From Consumption Carnival to Carbon Reduction Experiment "Double Eleven" Sounds Green Variations

China News Service, Beijing, November 2 (Reporter Xia Bin) As China is fully advancing the "Double Carbon" strategy, the biggest change in this year's "Double Eleven" is green and low-carbon.

From a big consumption carnival to a test ground for carbon reduction, this year's "Double Eleven" has sounded a variation on the green transformation of e-commerce.

Behind digital transactions, energy consumption must be reduced.

Cheng Li, chief technology officer of Alibaba, believes that three examination questions must be answered well in a technically low-carbon "Double Eleven".

First, how to make the data center more "green" and more energy-efficient; secondly, how to improve the efficiency of unified resource scheduling through computing power sharing; thirdly, how to maximize the efficiency and value of unit computing power.

Zhou Hongchun, a researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council, told a reporter from China News Agency that data shows that domestic data centers emit about 100 million tons of carbon dioxide a year. Green data centers are built through data center sharing and renewable energy utilization. It will be beneficial to data storage and utilization, and contribute to carbon reduction.

It is reported that during this year's "Double Eleven" period, Ali Zhangbei Data Center is expected to use nearly 30 million kilowatt-hours of green power and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 26,000 tons. The amount of carbon reduction is expected to increase by 100% compared with last year's "Double Eleven" period.

“It’s not enough to make data centers greener. Everyone knows that the utilization rate of data centers is usually very low, especially for small data centers, where the utilization rate is less than 10%. A way to realize the sharing of computing power and promote better unified scheduling of resources, so the cloud model and technical architecture have the opportunity to greatly improve the utilization rate of the data center.

Behind the consumption behavior, we must advocate green.

Consumption is the "ballast stone" for the steady operation of China's economy.

In 2020, final consumption expenditure will account for 54.3% of GDP.

Zhou Hongchun believes that how to promote the concept of green and low-carbon during the "Double Eleven", which is a feast for Chinese consumption, is of vital importance to guiding the overall people's green consumption concept.

"As a green transformation experiment, the core of guiding green products from the consumer side is to promote the production and sales of energy-saving products, water-saving products, and environmentally friendly products through more green consumer products and green orders, and the entire chain from production to consumption. Come to make a green and low-carbon transformation." Zhou Hongchun said.

Jin Min, a professor at the School of Environment of Renmin University of China, believes that from the perspective of the entire industry chain, the e-commerce platform naturally has the advantage of promoting green consumption. It directly faces the supply-side merchants and the demand-side consumers. Merchants implement green supply chain management and conduct conceptual guidance on the green transformation of consumer behavior.

It is reported that this year’s “Double Eleven” on Tmall launched a green venue for the first time, marking the first time for green certified products, issuing green shopping vouchers totaling 100 million yuan to consumers for the first time, and establishing a green merchant alliance.

Behind the express logistics, it is necessary to recycle.

China's express delivery business has ranked first in the world for seven consecutive years. In 2020, the national express delivery business volume will complete 83.36 billion pieces, a year-on-year increase of 31.2%.

Jiang Hao, executive vice president of the Green Logistics Branch of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, told a reporter from China News Agency that with the rapid development of the e-commerce industry, the express delivery industry has flourished, especially under the epidemic situation. The upswing has brought convenience to the majority of residents while also generating huge energy consumption.

"E-commerce's promotion of green logistics mainly involves express packaging, warehousing and transportation, processing, information processing, and management planning."

"There is a common problem in the express industry now that the motivation to do green logistics is insufficient, because there are some external costs that need to be borne by enterprises. At this time, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of Green Logistics 2.0 under the constraint of the'dual-carbon' goal, and introduce green Finance, for example, if companies invest in green and low-carbon projects, they may get green benefits through regulatory approvals and market transactions." Jiang Hao said.

Chen Long, vice president of Alibaba Group and head of ESG, believes that in the process of transition to a green and low-carbon circular economy, two mechanisms are needed to work together.

One is top-down, that is, national policy guidance, which is realized by means of emission control, carbon tax, carbon trading, subsidies, etc.; the other is bottom-up, which is mainly driven by market and technology to connect consumers and producers.

The two complement each other, and they are inseparable from the matching and interaction of technological innovation and institutional innovation.
