Paris is slowing down: For reasons of road safety, noise reduction and climate protection, cars will only drive up to 30 kilometers per hour on almost all streets of the French capital from the end of August.

Exceptions are the ring road, the arterial roads and some other larger traffic axes, said the Green politician and responsible for traffic transformation in the team of Mayor Anne Hidalgo, David Belliard, on Thursday the AFP news agency.

According to the information, Tempo 70 should still be allowed on the ring road, axes such as the Champs-Elysées can be driven at 50 km / h.

"It's about reducing the space for cars," said Belliard.

He wanted to “secure the streets of the capital for the weakest”: pedestrians, cyclists, children and senior citizens.

"We're reducing noise pollution, we're making traffic more fluid by reducing the effects of acceleration and braking," he said.

With this measure, Hidalgo is keeping one of its campaign promises.

The mayor announced in January that she wanted to make Paris greener and more pedestrianized.

The Champs-Elysée is to be greened for 225 million euros and converted into a secluded promenade.

With the lighthouse project, Hidalgo also wants to mitigate the consequences of climate change.

In Germany, too, seven large cities, including Aachen, Hanover and Münster, want to test a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour.
