A fan being tested?

Nobody needs that in winter, one might think.

When it works as an air purifier and humidifier at the same time as the Dyson Humidify + Cool, it sounds like an exciting device that can take care of the room climate all year round.

The practical test from "Computer Bild" shows how well the Dyson succeeds.

Why is the indoor climate specialist needed?

We have been spending a lot of time at home in our own four walls, not just since Corona, Lockdown and home office.

We are the “indoor” generation and spend up to 90 percent of our life in closed rooms - at least that's what Dyson thinks.

Air conditioning and heating systems work at home that often make the air too dry.

But air that is too humid is also the perfect breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.

Conventional humidifiers can help, but are also suspected of blowing further pests into the air if the water used is not hygienic.

Quickly ready to go: the filters supplied are easy to plug in.

Simple fans can take the problem of pollution to extremes if they distribute the polluted air in the room - and blow it towards people.

This is how the Dyson improves the indoor climate

Dyson wants to do all this better with the Pure Humidify + Cool.

With a height of almost a meter and a diameter of a good 30 centimeters, the part is not exactly small.

Before you can start, the filters supplied are installed after unpacking.

They are quickly inserted - and later changed if necessary: Everything is described step by step, the components snap into the device without any problems.

Noticeable: A lot of plastic is used, but that doesn't bother much, because unlike with a cell phone, for example, the feel of a device is less important.

Now electricity.

The included power supply is very bulky, so it should be placed behind a cabinet with the help of the 1.8 meter long cable.

The design is typical of Dyson and remains a matter of taste.

However, the chic cover blended in well with the test apartment.

There are three devices in it that take care of the room air:

Filter and purify air (Pure)

The Dyson works with HEPA-13 and activated carbon filters, which, according to the manufacturer, should remove 99.9 percent of fine dirt particles and harmful suspended matter from the air.

If the device cleans at maximum power, according to the manufacturer, up to 320 liters per second should circulate through the filter.

In fact, the air felt better in the practical test, just less standing and stuffy.

When set to "Automatic", the Dyson independently regulates how much air it draws in and cleans.

This was noticeable when cooking, for example.

Important information can be read on the color display.

The small remote control must be used to control it

After ventilating by opening the window, he often noticed an increased dose of fine dust - and gave full throttle to take countermeasures.

This also had an effect on the noise level.

With up to 60 decibels, the device then boomed as loud as a normal conversation or the running television at room volume.

It should be clear that the filters can improve the air quality in the room, but are not a miracle weapon against corona and other viruses.

Regular ventilation and compliance with hygiene rules are therefore also absolutely mandatory in the house with the Dyson!

Humidify air (humidify)

The test apartment has older floor heating and large windows that let in plenty of light and warmth on sunny days.

That put the Dyson to the test as a humidifier.

There are also around five liters of tap water in the tank.

Filters and special UV-C light work to make the water pore-deep clean before it is “sprayed”.

Caution is advised when filling the water in order not to disturb the sensors.

Some users report problems, after which the air humidification went on strike and the device sometimes failed completely.

These problems did not occur in the “Computer Bild” test.

If you are sensitive to dry air, you should pay attention to a humidity of at least 40, preferably 50 to 60 percent.

Percentages between 30 and 70 can be selected as the target value.

In order to bring the humidity from 35 percent to a recommended value (50 percent) and thus to bring the displayed air quality scale from “bad” to “good”, the device needed between 40 and 60 minutes in automatic mode.

In daily use, the water supply in the tank lasted about seven to ten days.

Cool air (cool)

display

A function that will only prove itself in the coming summer - the Dyson also serves as a fan.

Unlike conventional devices that only circulate the air, the Pure Humidify + Cool generates an air flow from humidified air.

The towel in front of the fan, which is supposed to cool the room air on hot days, has had its day.

The special feature: In order to distribute the air in the room, not the entire base rotates, but only the narrow ventilation slots.

That makes the cooling a little quieter.

In the so-called breeze mode, the air flaps rotate in opposite directions, which is supposed to imitate a natural sea breeze.

In fact, the testers found it very pleasant, as the air did not blow directly into their faces.

For even more subtle and indirect cooling, the Dyson can also let fresh air out at the back of the device.

Smart control via app and voice

In order to always have the many functions at hand, the Dyson has these control options:

Buttons and display on the device: There are two buttons directly on the Dyson.

With one you can switch the device on and off, with the other you start the deep cleaning cycle.

With this, the water filled into the tank is prepared for air humidification according to the water hardness and freed from limescale.

There is a small, circular color display below the buttons.

There the device shows information about the air quality.

-

Remote control:

The supplied infrared remote control is used for operation.

It has ten buttons to regulate air cleaning and humidification and to control the air flow.

Practical: The small gray bar is magnetic and can therefore dock securely on top of the device - but with the buttons facing down.

If you want to press something, you cannot leave the remote control in its parked position, you have to pick it up first.

If you like it smart, you can download the Dyson Link app onto your mobile phone.

There you have access to all functions and detailed measurement data

Dyson Link app:

Real smart home fans can download the free “Dyson Link” app to their mobile phones anyway.

It connects to the Dyson via WLAN - so it is also possible to control it while on the move.

On top of that, the app offers more information and controls.

In the app, you can see at a glance how things are currently in terms of temperature, air quality, humidity, fine dust and nitrogen pollution.

Measured values, graphs and recordings of the past days and weeks are available at the touch of a finger.

To do this, "Continuous monitoring" must be activated in the app settings.

Notifications can also be switched on here, reminding of a filter change or an upcoming water purification.

Incomprehensible: A Dyson account is essential to use the app.

Voice control:

In app mode, I can also link the device to Amazon Alexa.

Anyone who has installed the Dyson Skill then controls the device using voice commands via a mobile phone or Alexa loudspeaker.

That worked in the test without any problems.

Apple's HomeKit is not supported, but voice control works here via a detour using a Siri shortcut.

-

Night mode and programs:

If the noise level and the illuminated display bothers you while you are sleeping, you can switch to night mode via app or remote control.

Then the device goes to work much more discreetly and with less noise.

At 30 to 35 decibels, only a slight noise was heard.

It goes without saying that the full performance is not there so that you sometimes have to rework loudly in the morning.

If you want, you can program the functions on freely selectable days of the week and times.

A sleep timer is also on board (15 minutes to nine hours).

Conclusion:

If the poor air quality in your own four walls does not leave you cold, the Pure Humidify + Cool is a solid indoor climate specialist.

It is not exactly small, but it combines three devices in one and thus provides good service all year round.

This is also confirmed by the measurement data from other smart home devices such as installed Tado heating controllers, which attested a better room climate in the three months of practical tests.

In view of the high price of 699 euros, the purchase is only worthwhile if the part is used as an air purifier, humidifier and fan in equal measure.

The combination is smart, as is the control via app, Alexa or automatic.

Nevertheless, the Dyson does not work miracles: it reaches its limits when removing coronaviruses or in rooms that are too large with underfloor heating.

Strengths:

three devices in one, ready for use quickly, app, Alexa and automatic control

Weaknesses:

high price, sometimes loud operating noise
