The United States suffered a new disavowal at the UN on Tuesday in its desire to see international sanctions against Iran restored. The presidency (Indonesian) of the Security Council assured "not to be able" to take a decision to achieve this objective. In a statement, the Iranian mission to the UN welcomed the rejection of the American approach.

Indonesia is taking over the presidency of the Council in August. The body is "not in a position to decide on a new action" to grant the American request, declared the Indonesian ambassador, Dian Triansyah Djani. Main argument put forward by the ambassador, the lack of consensus within the UN supreme body on Washington's approach, reports Agence France-Presse.

Last week, following a United States notification to the UN to restore international sanctions against Tehran, 13 out of 15 Security Council members (excluding the United States and the Dominican Republic) wrote to the Indonesian Presidency to reject its validity.

According to these countries, since Washington is no longer part of the nuclear agreement concluded in 2015 with Tehran since 2018, the United States has no legal basis to trigger at the UN a return of international sanctions via this pact.

But despite this initial failure, the United States did not admit defeat. By virtue of resolution 2231  " which ratified the 2015 nuclear agreement, "  we are entitled to trigger  " the return of international sanctions and keep the "  firm intention to do so in the absence of courage and moral clarity from the Advice,  ”asserted the American ambassador to the UN, Kelly Craft.

It can be no surprise that we have arrived here today. All Council members knew of our right under Resolution 2231 to trigger snapback, and we did so in the absence of courage and moral clarity by the Council.

Under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal , a notification of violation of its commitments by Iran must in principle be followed by a motion for a resolution by the Presidency of the Security Council.

The sidelining of this option by Indonesia was welcomed Tuesday, August 25 by several members of the Council, starting with the Iranian mission to the UN which welcomed the rejection of the American approach by "  an overwhelming majority  To the Security Council. The American notification is "  null and void, has no legal value and effect and is therefore totally inadmissible,  " said this press release.
