From the dimensions to the location, including the type of structure and filtration, building a swimming pool requires asking several questions. - IStock / City Presse

With the return of sunny days, you dream of owning your own swimming pool, both to beautify your outdoor spaces and to play sports and share beautiful moments with your family. And this year, you finally have the necessary budget to carry out this project.

But before contacting a professional to start construction, you will need to learn about the regulations in force and precisely define your desires and your needs.

Administrative procedures

First step before starting to dig your outdoor pool: check that your land is suitable for building. To do this, go to your town hall to consult the local urban plan. On the budget side, count between 25,000 and 30,000 euros on average for an in-ground pool. If construction proves impossible, you will have to fall back on an above-ground pool. If the surface of your swimming pool exceeds 10 m2, you must also submit a prior declaration of work.

The dimensions

Do you live in a hot and sunny region, or in a province where the sky is often overcast? Do you have a host of children and teenagers at home or are you living in retirement as a couple? Are you an avid swimmer or do you just enjoy splashing around every now and then?

Depending on the use you plan to make of your pool, its design, size and layout will vary considerably. Thus, for a large family who appreciates water games, it is better to provide a fairly large pool (at least 4 m wide by 8 long) and deep enough to dive. An older couple may be content with smaller dimensions, while a strong swimmer may prefer a lane.

Location and orientation

To determine where to dig your pool, you will have to take into account several criteria. First, the regulatory aspect: the site must be at a distance of at least three meters from your fence, unless it is contiguous to your terrace. On the technical side, it may be wise to carry out a soil study to verify its composition, because the nature of the ground (loose soil or hard rock) may influence the time and budget devoted to the work. Also think about the sunshine: in order for the water to be as hot as possible, it is better to orient the basin towards the south. Finally, to facilitate maintenance, as much as possible avoid having the pool built near trees such as pines, the needles of which will constantly fall into the pool.

Structure and coating

To build your swimming pool, you will have the choice between different construction methods: concrete - the most solid option and which allows flexibility of shape -, modular panels or a monocoque structure, which imposes predefined shapes on you but is the faster to install.

Then, depending on the option you have selected, you will have to choose a coating to ensure the waterproofing of the pool. The least expensive liner offers many color options but will need to be changed every ten years or so. The reinforced membrane, a kind of thicker and welded liner, has a lifespan of about twenty years. Finally, polyester and coatings are effective and long-lasting, but more expensive.

Filtration

To maintain clean, quality water, it is essential to install a filtration system in addition to chemical chlorine treatments. There are different types of filter, sand (the most common), glass, diatom (the most efficient), pocket or cartridge (the easiest to install).

Security

Since 2006, it has been compulsory to equip all swimming pools with a safety system, since the pools can represent a real danger for young children left unattended. It could be an alarm, a fence, a security tarpaulin or a covering shelter. At a much higher cost, these last three options are nevertheless more reliable.
