In the firing line, the world of finance was put to use. Banks are committed to supporting people in financial fragile situations and to freeze bank rates for all their customers in 2019. More than a year later, the balance sheet remains mixed.

3.3 million fragile customers supported

The commitments made vis-à-vis households experiencing financial difficulties have been kept, as confirmed by the controls carried out by the Prudential Control and Resolution Authority and the Directorate General for Competition. On February 1, 2019, the 3.3 million people identified as such benefited from the overall cap on their costs for banking incidents, fixed at 25 euros monthly and reduced to 20 euros in June of the same year.

At the same time, the number of holders of the specific “fragile clientele” offer increased from 351,000 people in 2017 to 490,000 at the end of 2019. Remember that this package allows you to take advantage of the usual banking services at a rate limited to 3 euros. maximum per month, while intervention fees are capped at 4 euros per operation and 20 euros monthly.

Account maintenance fees on the rise

If the banks played the game for the most vulnerable users, did they do it for all of their customers? According to a study by the Observatory of bank rates published last February, the vast majority of service prices (bank card, withdrawals, intervention fees, etc.) have remained stable, in accordance with the commitment made by the establishments.

On the other hand, account maintenance fees increased: + 3.17% between 2019 and 2020, with an average of 20.49 euros billed per year. Only thirteen banks continue to post a free service in this area.
