After delicate beginnings, the world of education has organized itself to offer rich and numerous online educational resources. There is something for all ages and all levels. - CC0

Because of the coronavirus epidemic, some 850,000 students have had their schools closed. Very quickly, the education system had to organize itself to ensure pedagogical continuity.

The first moments were laborious, government platforms were overwhelmed with registration requests and the servers could not stand the shock. The difficulties of digital work spaces (ENT) are an example of these delicate beginnings. But little by little, other actors have emerged.

Knowledge accessible free of charge

Difficulties for parents in reaching “digital work spaces” (ENT or Direct School in the private sector) prompted them to turn to other resources. The main one is undoubtedly the Cned. As part of its “My class at home” program, the National Distance Education Center offers free learning modules for all sections, from kindergarten to high school, through college. The site registered more than a million registrations the first days, causing disruptions of service, but today seems to keep pace.

At the same time, the association of publishers of national education immediately put its textbooks online. The works are accessible free of charge on the site. The Ministry of Education has set up a program called "Learning Nation". This portal brings together educational content created by France Télévision, the Radio France group and Arte (also available on the Educ'Arte site). Thousands of hours of programming are available.

Parents who have successfully completed the official programs can also turn to the EdTech France association, which lists, by level, the most useful learning sites. This platform is also intended for adults who want to train. A significant number of grandes écoles, but also of companies, have also opened access to their courses and training.

Teachers on the front line

The teachers, too, organize themselves. The Jenseigne site, a benchmark before the crisis, experienced an explosion in its registrations. The platform offers more than 70,000 educational resources for all ages. Some are chargeable, but a large part is accessible free of charge, mainly for small levels.

Teachers have found support on YouTube for distance learning. One of the channels to follow is, for example, Les Bons Profs, which provides general education through courses lasting around 20 minutes maximum. There is also Mathrix, Antisèche or Parlons Y-stoire. Without forgetting La Maîtresse goes live, which offers, every day from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., a live class for nursery schools.
